The MDG3 Champion Torch: “To Do Something Extra”
On 7 March 2008 the Global MDG3 Champion Torch was launched in Copenhagen. In the run-up to the planned UN High Level MDG meeting on 25 September 2008, more than 100 MDG3 Torches will travel around the world.
Recipients of the
MDG3 Torch
will be representatives of governments, the private sector, civil society, the media, individuals from North and South, and international organisations.
Each MDG3 Torch Bearer will commit to “Doing Something Extra” in support of gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.
The MDG3 Torch may be passed to others that make additional commitments – thereby igniting a wave of global resolve in support of MDG3.
At the planned UN High Level MDG meeting on 25 September 2008, all commitments will be presented to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who will be invited to light the last MDG3 Torch.

What is Denmark doing up to the UN high-level MDG meeting in September 2008
As part of the campaign a number of advocacy activities will be directed towards increasing attention on the need for innovative thinking and greater commitments from the international society.
Danish embassies and missions will together with the torch bearers in a number of countries create increased attention on the need to do something extra now for the empowerment of women in order to achieve MDG3.
Multilateral events in the World Bank, EU and elsewhere in the run up to September will be used to pass on the torch to leaders of organisations with the request that they to do more for MDG3.
Together with all partners Denmark will use the Torch Campaign to work for the
political goals of MDG3 at the high-level meeting in September
.
