Women's potential
Release the tremendous potential of women as agents of change and development. Without gender equality and the empowerment of women, the
Millennium Development Goals
will not be achieved on a global scale.
The World Bank calls the economic empowerment of women "smart economics" - and the logic is simple: Women lack economic empowerment which imperils growth and poverty reduction. Women work hard, and should be assisted to work “smart”.
More resources
Despite joint international
commitments to promote gender equality by partner countries and donors
, an enormous Gender Challenge still remains today. Increased common efforts are needed from both rich and poor countries and from the private and public sector to overcome thsee challenges.
More resources have to be allocated to
gender equality and women’s empowerment in poor countries by partner countries and donors alike
.
More commitments
Increased aid allocations from donors should be matched by a strong commitment from developing countries to integrate gender equality and women’s empowerment into their national development strategies.
The goal should be to
ensure budget allocations and implementation as well as the creation of a non-discriminatory and enabling environment that promotes women’s equal access to resources
- including opportunities in the formal private sector.
It is a question of good inclusive governance – and the primary responsibility rests at national level.
Public-private partnership
Moreover, the private sector should commit itself to promote the economic empowerment of women through responsible behavior in developing countries. Private companies must commit themselves to the principles of equal pay, equal opportunities for women and men with regard to employment, human resource development and career prospects.
In a globalised world, there is a crucial need for strong public-private partnership if poverty is to become history.
Together with all partners committed to this agenda we will:
- Map what needs to be done and build a common vision to scale up successes and address current gaps.
- Seek to
link the efforts of international organisations, governments, national organisations, companies and individuals to promote MDG3.
- Gather tangible commitments.
- Identify milestones to measure international progress on MDG3 and work to ensure that greater action is achieved.
